Los Angeles-based vocalist Phyllis St. James started out as a composer in the early '80s. She wrote songs for Jean Carne, Norman Connors, Rodney Franklin, and The Jones Girls, before signing her own deal with Motown in 1984. The album entitled Ain't no turnin' back was not a commercial success despite tracks like Candlelight afternoon and Phonemate so Phyllis turned to session work. She sang background vocals on albums by Gerald Albright, Teddy Pendergrass and Atlantic Starr.
