Led by brothers Wallace
and Walter Scott Whispers were already veterans when their career
received well-earned boost in mid-'70s. Having scored minor soul hits
for various small labels, quintet signed with Soul Train Records,
offshoot of TV's most important black music show. In '78, Soul Train
envolved into SOLAR (Sound Of Los Angeles Records). Solar production
supremo Leon Sylvers brought The Whispers their first and biggest
international smash with 1980's And the beat goes on. However, after
second transatlantic hit with It's a love thing and Some kinda lover
group's success began to slide; although unlike most disco stars,
they were still charting in late '80s, in U.K. pop and U.S. soul listings.
Among these later successes was the LA & Babyface-produced '87 single
Rock Steady.
